Gerry the Lucky Christie Lake Horse
During the early twentieth century, horses were a valuable asset to homeowners and farmers. Sadly, accidents happened. A horse that broke its leg almost always had to be euthanized.
It was in the early 1930’s that a horse named Gerry had been terribly injured and was to be put down due to such a break.
Reg Sproule would not listen to those who told him the animal needed to be put out of his misery. Instead, using his ingenuity, Reg went to the ice-storage house, rigged up a special sling to a cross-beam and managed to get the contraption under Gerry’s belly to support his weight! During the next few weeks, Reg and his family tended the injured animal. To many folks surprise, Gerry eventually recovered and, to the joy of his owner, was returned healthy and ready to go back to work!
